Listening strategies for watching videos

This video shows you strategies for ways to better understand natural English. Before you watch a video, you can predict the topic, and activate prior knowledge. During your listening exercises, there are several ways to listen, and different things to listen for. Using these strategies will help you get the most out of your activities.

 

There are several skills associated with listening ability, including knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, syntax (how words are organized within sentences) and word segmentation (the ability to hear individual words within sentences). By watching videos and answering questions on them to test your comprehension, you will develop your ability to understand spoken English at a natural pace.

There are 12 listening units below to help you improve your listening skills and increase your knowledge about different topics. You can read a short explanation about each unit before you watch the video and take the quiz. Watch the video on this page, or when taking the quiz, you can watch the video that is embedded in the quiz form. When you click on the quiz link, a new window will open. There is no time limit for this activity, so take your time, stop, and rewind the video as many times as you need to help you better understand the content.
